In an attempt to reverse sagging sales to rival AMD, Intel is launching a core 2 quad processor-its third in the series of four-core processor. AMD's dual-core Opteron and Athlon chips have helped AMD gain market over Intel. The new chip for high-end computers follows the launch of quad-core Xeon 5300 in November. It will be launched in Las Vegas during the CSE.
Xeon 5300 was meant for servers.
Intel has been battling AMD that has been fast in rolling out high-end chips complete with advanced technology in which Intel has been lagging.
Though the new chip is being targeted at the multimedia and gaming enthusiasts, Intel is hoping the mainstream users will adopt the chip. With this launch, Intel is trying to use the technology platforms in the markets that includes home, mobile and enterprises.
Though Intel has not announced the launch date, the core 2 quad has been a weapon in the Intel armoury by which it plans to gain market. |
