Juniper Networks has announced mid-range, 10 Gigabit-enabled multiservice edge router M120, which the company describes as a feature-rich and scalable multiservice edge routing platform.

The M120 Multiservice Edge Router utilizes the same JUNOS software and is based on the I-chip, Juniper’s packet forwarding engine technology.

"We are pleased with the new M120 platform because it delivers 10 Gigabit uplink capabilities in a compact, efficient form factor, providing a cost-effective solution for our regional points of presence," said Doug Junkins, vice president of IP Engineering Global IP Network Business Unit, NTT America,” said Doug Junkins, vice president of IP Engineering Global IP Network Business Unit, NTT America.

The M120 supports a wide range of configurations, including 1+1 and 1:N redundancy and provides operators the flexibility to optimize the platform.

Eve Griliches, research manager, IDC said, "With the M120, Juniper has delivered today’s multiservice requirements on a new platform upon which carriers can build IPTV and triple play networks, as well as converge older connection-oriented networks."

The versatile M120 platform is compatible for a wide variety of deployments, including:

  • Scalable Multiservice Edge: optimized for smaller to medium-sized points of presence (POPs) and central offices
  • Small and Medium Core Networks: for Internet peering and route reflector applications, delivering sophisticated routing capabilities with multiple 10 Gigabit links
  • Collapsed POP Router: capable of providing both edge services and backbone routing on a single platform with both 10 Gigabit uplinks and a wide range of customer-facing interfaces
  • Ethernet Aggregation at the Multiservice Edge: includes support for up to 128 Gigabit Ethernet subscriber ports, two 10 GB uplinks, and full support for Ethernet, VPLS, MPLS, IP, Frame Relay and ATM VPNs
  • Large Enterprises: provides WAN gateway solution for large enterprises and data centers. Offers support for Layer 2 and Layer 3 VPNs, including enterprise MPLS and VPLS with the advanced Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities required to support voice, video and a variety of data services.
