IBM Rational Application Tops IDE Scorecard

IBM Rational Application Developer has been named the number one Integrated Development Environment (IDE) based on user rankings for the second consecutive year. The ranking is based on the Evans Data’s the Developers’ Choice IDE Scorecard, a study in which 1,200 developers worldwide rank the top IDEs they are using.

Rational Application Developer is competing against commercial IDEs such as Adobe/Macromedia Studio 8, Borland’s JBuilder, Netbeans, and Oracle Developer Suite to name a few. Sixteen distinct categories, from best debugger and compiler to best web design tools, are ranked.

"IBM’s commitment to open standards allows the individual developer and development teams to more easily develop cross-platform applications," said Roger Oberg, Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, IBM Rational Software.

"IDEs are a fundamental key ingredient of a developer’s success and in fact we find that most use 2-3 in their work flow," said John Andrews, president of Evans Data Corporation.

Microsoft’s Visual Studio.NET is by far the most widely used IDE in all 3 major geographic (NA, EMEA, APAC) regions. Visual Studio.NET also placed second in overall ranking, followed by Borland’s Delphi in third place.
